A country-sized referral system

China runs a formal national network for rare and difficult diseases: 419 hospitals, one provincial lead per region, and a single national coordinating hospital at the top — Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) in Beijing. Hard cases flow upward through this network by design. Official reporting credits it with cutting the average time to diagnose a rare disease from four years to under four weeks.

Why scale finds what scarcity misses

A disease that is one-in-a-million is rare in a clinic but not in a country of 1.4 billion: somewhere in China, a team has likely seen dozens of cases like yours. PUMCH institutionalizes this with multidisciplinary consultations that put a dozen specialists around one difficult case at once. West China Hospital in Chengdu — the world's busiest single hospital by many measures — plays the same role for the country's west.
